Early Christmas
Well I got some lovely mail yesterday. That mail was my sweet order from the Fantasy Flight Games sale which contained my Call of Cthulhu, Street Fighter and A Game of Thrones card games. I have to give it to them for keeping their packing minimized. Most companies box little items up in huge boxes but come on, these are cards right. Now I didn’t get too much time to go through everything but I do have some initial impressions thats general for all of these games.
I have to commend Fantasy Flight on their quality of products. The cards unlike other card game I have seen thus far have almost a plastic feel to them like playing cards occasionally have. Unlike Magic: The Gathering or even World of Warcraft: TCG where you fear for the safety of your cards after many plays, I don’t have this fear with these cards. They do seem very very durable.
The style of the cards is second to none. Often I find with Magic and WoW you have one side which has a logo which is generaly plain while the other has all the crunch with an awesome piece of art. In the case of Call of Cthulhu I really liked the logo aspect. I find unlike the two I mentioned that it didn’t seem too boring. Often I look at magic and think wow these are incredible cards but could they not change the other side. I know they do this for tournament reasons and standardization but still. Kudos to Call of Cthulhu on that one. The art is fantastic and noticed that some of the Call of Cthulhu art was also in Arkham Horror. I love the style and it is very fitting. Street Fighter I noticed one of the pictures being from the second animated movie. Not sure if other shots are from the movies, series or whatnot but still pretty none the less.
I dug a bit into the rules for the Call of Cthulu: CCG and was pretty interested as it was not an almost direct clone of Magic. They seem to try and be somewhat unique in respect to ressources, iconography, etc. I still need to do further reading and then try these all out with the gang but so far so good. I will say it again though that I am slightly dissapointed the at the CoC Card Game edition which is nothing but fixed card sets. I kind of like the aspect of having cards that others may not have. I can see why they may have done it but still.
